President's Message October, 2011

Hi All,

Shop Hops, Quilt Shows, and County Fairs; throw in new classes, quilt camp and holiday projects and it makes for one busy schedule.

A tremendous thank you to the special ladies who presented the demos at the last meeting. Great variety and good ideas for novice to expert quilters. We need to do more of those. I also heard positive things about our special themes and the new changes for the meetings. I appreciate those kind words.

October is when we celebrate our Guild "Birthday". To make it even more fun, each month will be represented at the meeting. Find out who all has a birthday in the same month and maybe even the same day as yours. There will also be some other surprises! Be sure to be there.

The day camp is looking like it will be a fun and educational time for everyone. Comfort blocks, a paper piecing project, and two mini classes are in the planning stages. It is aimed at new members and beginning quilters, but ALL MEMBERS are urged to join the fun! So sign up now!!!!

On behalf of Ben and I, a heartfelt thank you for the lovely cards, food, thoughts, prayers and memorials members have extended for the loss of our son, Kelly. We are blessed to have such thoughtful and caring friends. We truly appreciate your kindness.

CHALLENGE yourself - CREATE new ideas - CELEBRATE your accomplishments!

QUESTION? SHOULD WE KEEP THE SEAPORT QUILTERS WEBSITE?

Ladies, due to the guest speaker and the other "stuff "at the next meeting and to save time, I am throwing this out for your consideration.

The rent on the web site is due - it is $167.76 for 2 years. We need to decide if we want to keep the website - enhance it or let it go. We can put a counter on it for $48 a year to let us know how many hits it gets. Is that something we want to consider? Do you use the site? How often? Do you contribute to it or let the webmaster, Linda Henderson know of items for the website? Where do we want to go with this? Please consider these options and we will make a decision at the October meeting.

GUILD CLASSES

Payment for guild sponsored classes is due at sign up. Your name will go on a waiting list if class is at maximum and you will be notified if there is an opening. CANCELLATION is required 2 weeks before first class to get a refund. No refunds are returned after the 2 week period, except in emergency (death, flood or fire). The beginning quilt class had 9 people signed up and by the day of first class only two were left. This is not worth the time and effort by the teacher to hold the class, let alone the site of the class or the folks who are still signed up. Materials have been purchased, rent for building paid and arrangements for babysitters complete.

As a courtesy, and foreseeing an emergency, please call Nanda (746-1421) well in advance if you cannot make the class. Payment for the beginning class will be returned this time, but future classes will follow the above guidelines.

COMFORT QUILTS

The number of quilts turned in was down over the summer as we all enjoyed the great outdoors or our grandchildren's baseball games. Now that the weather is heading towards fall and the kids are back in school, I hope you'll be able to find some time to once again work on comfort quilts. There will not be a monthly comfort quilt block until after the holidays. Instead, I hope that you'll work on that comfort quilt you've been meaning to finish up. Don’t forget that we will need to restock for Camp Erin; we’ll need 40-50 quilts for that great project. For those of you who enjoy making the blocks, please find your favorite block pattern and make several. There will be a new contest after the first of the year that will be using these blocks.

MYSTERY QUILT

It's still not too late to join the Mystery Quilt Program. If you've already signed up, please be sure to pick up the new steps at each meeting. The final steps and a reveal will take place at the November meeting. Everyone who shows their finished top (doesn’t have to be quilted) at the February meeting will be eligible for some great prizes.

Shelley Nagle

REMINDER: DECEMBER 5TH SEAPORT QUILTERS DINNER

The prices are the same and will be part of the signup sheet.

The social hour is at 6:00 and the food service starts at 6:30.

SEAPORT QUILTERS GUILD MEETING

SEAPORT QUILTERS GUILD MEETING

SEPTEMBER 26, 2011

The regular monthly meeting opened at 7:00 pm at the Pautler Center by Pres. Pat Martin.

Featured quilters for this month are Connie and Phil Stevens and Sally Heuett. Samples of their quilting were on display at the front of the meeting room.

The Traveling Basket of goodies was won by Julie Cunningham. She will bring the basket filled with items to next month’s meeting. One dollar purchases one chance to win the basket. Guests, new members and renewing past members were introduced. Minutes were approved as written in the newsletter. Treasurer Connie Stevens has membership cards for those who have paid their dues. Show and Tell for tables 6 through 8.

Reports:

Programs - No report, Connie Watson.

Education - Nanda Lamb announced future classes: Velma Gosso will lead a bag class at Patrick’s on Oct. 13. The class is $10 and the pattern is $10; a beginner’s quilt class, taught by Lynda Geist, will also be at Patrick’s on Oct. 7, 14 and 21, cost is $10 plus your supplies (a table runner from start to finish will be produced); Colleen Blackwood from

Pendleton will be at the Masonic Temple Oct. 22 - 23 to teach a 2 + 2 class, cost is $60 and includes the pattern. Nanda has all supply lists.

Comfort Quilts - Fat quarters were presented to Danna Bolich for turning in the most blocks. Next month there is no pattern, just turn in any 12 1/2 " block you would like to according to Chairperson Shelly Nagle.

Mystery Quilt - Shelly also says that you can still sign up for the mystery quilt project tonight. Pick up this month’s directions and any others you may have missed.

Library - 3 - 4 books have been turned in; there are no more pockets to put in to new books for the check out cards, so no new books will be available until some can be found. Bonnie Holland said she had a source.

Quilt Camp - Speaking for camp as well as the library, Betty Meloy informed us that guild camp will be Oct. 13 - 16 at Palouse Divide Lodge. The cost is $170 for three nights and $115 for two nights and includes two meals per day.

Show and Tell for tables 2 - 4.

Old Business - Festival of Trees organizer, Earlinia Scott, presented finished pieces of the decorations. The colors are blue and silver: crocheted, quilted, and yo-yo ornaments were displayed as well as many accessory items.

2012 Quilt Show-- members who sat with the fund raising quilt shown at the Nez Perce County Fair sold more than 400 tickets, said Sue Krueger. The quilt will also have a booth at the Clarkston Band Craft Fair on Nov. 12 and the Lewis Clark State College on Dec. 3. The cost is $45 and $40 respectively. Sue also shared thanks from the mother of children who had attended the Willow Center for Grieving Children. They had received quilts and loved them!

New Business - There will be lots to do at the Newcomer’s Camp on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5 at the Grange in Clarkston Heights. Susan Pakula and Shelly Nagle will be two of the teachers presenting mini-classes. Call Pat Martin for more details.

Guild gear (aprons, shirts, bags) is available now at the front table and you can still place an order for more items.

Quilts of Valor leader, Sharon Ledbetter, has received hundreds of leftover blocks from the national quilt challenge organization to make more quilts locally. Every regional coordinator was sent some of these blocks! Five quilts were given out locally last month and 279 quilts will be presented in December. Sharon said they are well on their way to reaching that goal. Also, standard size pillow slips in patriotic colors are needed to transport many of the quilts. Make/donate one if you can.

Door prizes are still needed for the guild’s Christmas dinner. Please bring them ASAP.

Tuesday Stitchers is cancelled tomorrow because of work being done at the meeting site.

Quilts on display at the Asotin County Library need to be replaced. Susan Pakula is looking for wall hanging/lap quilt size pieces suitable for hanging. They should be an autumn seasonal type in fall colors. Please bring them to the library on Friday, Sept. 30.

Door Prizes - There will be double drawings next month as prizes were not available this evening.

Block-of-the-Month - Sue Towne won all 18 blocks.

Fat Quarters - Janine Schneider and Julie Cunningham shared the blocks.

Traveling Basket - Won by Julie Cunningham.

Show and Tell of the remaining tables.

Program:

Hands-on demonstrations were set about the room for members to observe and interact with the presenters: Jean Martin and fusible appliqué; Bert McVicars and needle-turn appliqué; Earlinia Scott and starch freezer paper technique; and Lori Hatch and Jacki Ficker with Accu-Quilt cutters.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 as members were free to continue to enjoy the displays.

Respectfully submitted by,

Wendy Elder, Secretary

Members Bio - CONNIE STEVENS

I, like many other girls in the 1960’s was required to take Home Economics my freshman year. I liked it so much, that I took it all four years of high school. I learned how to sew clothes, which I didn’t really care for, but when I was a junior, I was given a quilt top by my best friend’s mother. She gave me the quilt top with the understanding that I would tie and hem it. Needless to say, it got me hooked.

That was the only quilt I made, until after I got married. When I got back to making quilts in the 70’s, I made one quilt at a time and then couldn’t afford to make another one for a year or two. I didn’t have any cutting tools except for scissors, so Phil made me some different sized 1 x 4 boards and I drew lines on the fabric with an ink pin. I would then cut the strips out with my scissors and cut each strip after I had sewn it to the square or strip that I was making. Things have changed a lot in the last twenty years and I have accumulated many different types of cutting tools that has made the process much easier.

I have made in excess of 100 quilts and have given almost all of them away to friends and family. Most of the ones I made at first were just some easy strips and squares or squares that I had embroidered and added sashing and borders to make baby quilts. I really enjoy the piecing and have graduated to harder things, but still have a bunch to learn. I have learned a lot in the last five years from taking classes and learning techniques from other members in the quild. I really enjoy the camaraderie and am happy that I joined.
